Day 40
So today was a quiet day. We enjoyed a chat with a German lady over breakfast. It was interesting to hear about how Covid is being dealt with in Germany and her views on this.
We have good views of Kilimanjaro from More Than A Drop (MTAD) this morning. We think there is more snow visible on the mountain than we have ever seen before.
On safari Pete’s glasses broke, not so that he couldn’t wear them but they were now uncomfortable so he wanted to get them fixed. Neema, who works at MTAD, wears glasses so Pete asked her where he should go. She gave us some directions so later this morning we walked into town.
We stopped to get some money from the bank and then tried to follow Neema’s instructions but couldn’t find the shop. At this point we weren’t too far from the Union Cafe so we decided to go there for some lunch.
When we got there we met Evodi, Robert’s friend who is a taxi driver. We explained our problem to Evodi in a mix of English/Kiswahili and “sign” language as Evodi doesn’t speak much English, but he seemed to understand. He took us to one shop that was shut and then on to another that also at first appeared shut but then a man appeared and opened it. He understood the problem and then seemed to take the piece needed to fix Pete’s glasses from another pair he had and used this to make the repair. He charged us TSH5,000 about £1.60.....bargain!!
We walked back to the cafe with Evodi and ordered some lunch. While we waited for our food we popped in to see Tabia, who runs the Internet cafe. We have known Tabia for many years as she used to work at ACTT. It was good to catch up.
After lunch Evodi dropped us back at MTAD where we spent the rest of the day. I managed to catch up on most of my blog entries for our safari.
This evening we managed a pretty good Zoom call with Simon, our son, and his girlfriend, Caf.
Day 41
So now we are back in Moshi we still have 3 schools that we need to visit. We have left Robert to arrange these for some time this week.
This morning we walk down to the ACTT offices. Robert has arranged for us to visit Jamhuri Primary School today.
We have supported this school for 3 years and they have 6 computers. However we have made the decision that with under 500 students, they are now pretty well set up and so we will finish our support here. Today we will handover the computers to the school so they can keep them and no longer need to report to us. This then enables us to expand the project to some new schools next year.
We meet the Headteacher, the Second Teacher and the ICT Teacher and do some paperwork to formalise the handover of the computers.
We then visit the computer room for one final check on the computers. A few students join us and demonstrate their knowledge of computer equipment.
We return to ACTT at lunchtime and have lunch at Mama Irene’s. Today she has provided pilau, rice with meat sauce, tomato salad and avocado. All very nice.
After lunch we walk back to MTAD and spend the afternoon here.
We were up on Kilimanjaro a couple of days ago. Lots of snow up there, and more over the last two days. We summited a day early because of incoming bad weather.
